Commercial solar bottlenecks? Solve them with data

Blog Main

Commercial and industrial (C&I) and utility-scale PV projects often face several hurdles that slow down timelines and reduce return on investment (ROI). But data-driven solutions are transforming the industry by helping streamline processes, improve ROI, and enable faster project completion. Solar companies that adopt these digital tools can overcome bottlenecks like permitting delays and resource constraints, ultimately staying competitive in a rapidly evolving market.

But how?

Our Unlocking the Power of Data playbook reveals best practices for using data to overcome common utility-scale and C&I issues, walks through the software you need, and more, so you can take the next steps. In this excerpt, we look at how data solutions can help from the very first client meeting.

“That first meeting with a prospect will no longer be just introducing yourself and asking if you can get up on their roof to do an analysis,” Paul Grana, former GM of HelioScope said. “You’re going to be able to ask very sophisticated questions and come in with specific options to consider. If they are looking for the highest return on investment, you can show what their bill pre- and post-solar and energy storage is going to look like. If they want to maximize emissions reductions, you can present options that are based on real technology solutions.”

Of course, the power of data to communicate the value commercial customers can receive becomes even more compelling when prospects provide actual consumption data and bills to a developer. And data can also help developers serve existing customers when utility rates change. This can be especially compelling to help commercial customers navigate demand charges, which frequently constitute most of their utility bill.

“After a utility rate change happens, you can use the data you have about your customer to run an analysis that shows what their new bill is going to be,” Grana said. “Based on that analysis, I should come back out and install a battery because it’s going to have a three-year payback because of these new rates. You can come in with a very targeted sales pitch to existing customers that will help you sell more hardware but also keep your customers happy.”

The complexity of commercial and utility-scale solar projects is an indication of progress. Because solar economics are so compelling, it is a viable option virtually everywhere. Its versatility makes combinations with other technologies, particularly energy storage, both possible and valuable to customers. The challenge for developers and other stakeholders is to translate solar’s vast financial and environmental benefits into reality. Data is a tool to do that.
